If that were the case, imagery should be a cognitively impenetrable phenomenon, but it is not.[ 29 ] The way we experience our mental imagery is clearly affected by our beliefs and goals. Play a white noise machine to block out distracting noises. Earlier this month, we spent a lot of time talking about mental illness here at the blog, in light of the sad news from Rick Warren and Saddleback. However, although the majority of both laymen and experts probably continue to accept some form of picture theory, many 20th century philosophers and psychologists, from a variety of theoretical traditions, have argued strongly against it, and, in several cases they have developed quite detailed alternative, non-pictorial accounts of the nature and causes of imagery experiences (e.g., Dunlap, 1914; Washburn, 1916; Sartre, 1940; Ryle, 1949; Shorter, 1952; Skinner, 1953, 1974; Dennett, 1969; Sarbin & Juhasz, 1970; Sarbin, 1972; Pylyshyn, 1973, 1978, 1981, 2002a, 2003a, 2005; Neisser, 1976; Hinton, 1979; Slezak, 1991, 1995; Thomas, 1999b, 2009).

Mental health counselors are typically prohibited from cognitive testing, or generally limited to only performing certain assessments in certain, strict conditions. First, I revised parts of this post to more away from the word “integrational.” Apparently, it’s a pejorative term that’s thrown around for non-Nouthetic teaching so I wouldn’t want to confuse anyone seeking help who stumbles upon this post. On the one hand its importance in the cognitive economy (or even its very existence) was now subject to doubt; on the other hand it had come to seem that it was very difficult, if not impossible, to study it experimentally and objectively.

Even in the wake of the revival of scientific interest in the cognitive roles of imagery in the 1960s and 70s, the handful of post-Wittgensteinian philosophers who have attempted to defend imagery-based theories of thought and meaning (Price, 1953; Lowe, 1995, 1996; Ellis, 1995; Nyíri, 2001) still find themselves swimming very much against the tide. Renowned singer Billy Joel’s fame wasn’t enough to pull him from diagnosed depression, and he tried to kill himself by drinking furniture polish because “it looked tastier than bleach.” Also an alcoholic, Joel has been in and out of rehab for the addiction which has made him sick on numerous occasions.
